Term 2 began with an Anzac Assembly in the first week. We were fortunate to have in attendance members of the Ulverstone RSL. A number of students represented the school and various community groups at Anzac Day Services.
We are proud that they were keen to participate in remembering all those that have served in the armed forces. A special thankyou to our staff member Ms Kate Reynolds, who was invited to be guest speaker at the Ulverstone Dawn Service.
This was an excellent choice, given her commitment to student led assemblies and remembrance days over a number of years.
A highlight for Term 2 is to see sport return for students with both Netball and Football competitions well underway. Staff commitment to assisting at these events is much appreciated amongst their busy schedules. We are looking forward to the return of our cross-country carnival, Thursday 27 May.
Year 11/12 mid-year reports have been sent home and the parent/teacher interviews are being held on Wednesday 26 May. Our website will have the link to make bookings. Year 7/10 reports will be sent home on Wednesday 16 June, with parent/teacher interviews on Wednesday 23 June.
Capital Works Submission
We are once again advocating for our future School Master Plan, which highlights the need for a major redevelopment. Our main focus in our submission is the classrooms and corridors surrounding the Library area. The need for toilet area upgrades has also been highlighted by our student body and these requests have also been incorporated into our plans.
Mr Lutwyche has taken some leave during Term 2 to attend to some niggles from his football playing days! He is recovering well and looking forward to returning to USC soon. We wish him well in his recovery.
Mrs Nikki Jackson has taken up an Acting role at Latrobe Primary School as the Business Manager. Mrs Helen Johnstone has joined our office team from Burnie High for Term 2.
Mr Simon Davis has commenced part-time in the MDT area.
Your College Association Committee met on Wednesday 5 May, after the long break over Easter and the holidays. We discussed the Capital Works application for 2021 that will be submitted very soon. During the holidays, I was pleased to have an inspection tour with Mrs Bellchambers around the areas of our school where refurbishments and renovations have been completed. These are very impressive and have made great improvements to physical surroundings as well the atmosphere of many classrooms and learning spaces, like new carpets and benches, heaps of fresh paintwork, many new aluminium doors and windows, and improved heating, installed in the Multi-Purpose Area at the front of the school. These should save money and provide better comfort for all users. Much credit for the careful planning and spending, with local trades people and suppliers mostly, goes to Mrs Bellchambers and the senior management team of your school. In support of their efforts, I contacted both the Labour and Liberal candidate teams to promote some major Capital Works spending in our College so we can embrace 21st century learning and teaching spaces and up-to-date gender-neutral toilets for our students. Any support from you to the Minister and the Department could help because parents are significant stakeholders in their children’s surroundings.
The kind donation from Murray at Maveric Clothing will be used for an additional drink fountain in the Student Centre where it will be connected to the mains supply.
All Tasmanian school communities are members of The Tasmanian Association of State School Organisations (TASSO) and can benefit from information on its website or directly. Cyber safety is a regular concern for parents as the internet gets more entrenched into our everyday lives. Check out TASSO’s May Newsletter at this link for details of an online forum later this month by the Alannah+ Madeline Foundation that could have some useful tips. The SRC have started the term off strongly, firstly by facilitating the Anzac Assembly and participating in ceremonies on Sunday 25 April.
On Thursday 13 May we held our first whole school Social in over a year due to COVID-19. The theme was ‘Back to Work’ and all donations went to Beyond Blue which amounted to over $500.
We are also assisting the USC Pride Group with a Casual Clothes Day on Friday 21May. We plan to dress up in rainbow colours.

‘Working it Out’ in celebration of IDAHOBIT
(International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia).
This term, the students in 10D have been exploring symbolism, themes and figurative language through the novel The Simple Gift by Steven Herrick. This free verse novel explores themes concerning random acts of kindness, homelessness and identity. It is a heart-felt story that focuses on a young teenage boy who leaves a broken home in search of happiness. As we follow Billy’s journey, we meet two other characters, Old Bill and Caitlin who also have issues to face. The students are thoroughly enjoying this text as it explores each character’s perspective of events and touches on issues they can relate to.
One of our learning tasks was creating a 50-word story which needed to be about one of the themes/issues raised in the book as well as include an example of figurative language. I was very pleased with their efforts and thought it would be nice to share some examples of their writing with others.
10D English Teacher
I opened the door, a feeling of dread and shame following each step. I shot a glance towards my grandpa. It told him all he needed to know. He read my face like it was a work of Shakespeare. I sluggishly moped into my room awaiting what was to come.
Walking through the gloomy city seeing somebody new sitting on each corner, as their home. They look as sad and cold as a stormy winter’s day. I see this one lady crying. I sit with her and ask if she would like someone to talk to. Kindness is always free.
I kissed her as she was leaving. She looked pale as death and was wrapped with fear going into the unknown.
It has been four years since she left here, the anger and sadness still flowing through me. Everyday the thought of her death makes me crazy. It is incomprehensible.
I woke up as excited as a kid on Christmas morning. Today was the day I could pick up my new car. I walked to the dealership and grabbed a coffee when I tripped and fell. A kind man helped me up and I was off to get my car.
It was a dark and misty morning. There were three birds on the top branch. I got up and reset the fire; it burned brighter than the sun and, in that moment, it felt like I was back in front of the fire, back home, except without the marshmallows. (laughs)
2am. My dark room shines bright from the moonlight. I am prepared to leave. I head down stairs, packing the whole fridge in my bag. I rush out the door and feel a gust of wind that sweeps me off my feet. Pushing my bike, I don’t look back. Goodbye.
I’ve done nothing but work recently, working like there was nothing else to do. There was. People gave their condolences. It was like I was dead. My grandmother, who’d raised me my whole childhood, had died suddenly. My friend, Thomas kept coming to my place every day. He saved me.
Run, Dudley, Run
He ran, so fast, faster than a leopard. He ran to get away from it, all of it. The chaos, fighting, yelling. He can’t help himself, it’s in his blood to fight. This time he’s running further, further than ever. Something said, something that can’t be taken back. He’s done.
I must leave home. Ever since mum left, dad hasn’t been the same. He’s almost always drunk and when he isn’t, he’s blaming everything on, and hitting, me. I lock my door and hide. It’s like he is drowning in a pool of alcohol and dragging me down with him.
WRITING WARRIORS CHALLENGE
Our first Writing Warriors challenge for the year was to write using
the second-person perspective.
Evil Hidden in a Haze
You make people’s lives so miserable without even trying. You cannot let anyone be happy for a second, minute, ever. You put your dirty hands on someone’s confidence and squeeze it like a sponge, until the last drip falls. As that last drip falls you stomp all over someone, leaving them mark less on the outside but scarred, shredded and cold on the inside. You live like this every day, without hesitation. Evil, you are so evil, if Satan was on earth it would be you. You ran the tears of everyone like a tap, you left them in drought as you ran them dry. No tears left to cry, emotionless. You are a sour lemon in an orchard of sweet oranges, hidden under the orange haze on your skin. You think you are perfect, like a model lazing on a beach, you’re not. You’re a b****. You drag people along the ground, until no skin remains, you make them feel like that anyway. You make them hate the skin they once felt comfortable in. You are evil, nothing less, nothing more, pure evil.
Stream of Consciousness
You’ve done it again, haven’t you? Well you need to hurry; people will see what you’re doing. You need to get up. Get your knees off the ground. Why are you doing this? Do you realise what you’ve done? This is a huge mistake, you’re ruining everything! Now quick, get up! You need to leave, people are going to come sooner or later. Come on, there’s an alley down there, run! Wipe that off your hands, you’re going to get caught. Why have you done this? What are your reasons? Do you have any? You will regret this. You’re not going to get away with this. Keep running, you can’t stop now. Are you going to turn yourself in? What if someone finds it? Maybe you should go back. OK, you have to go back. You need to get rid of everything! Run! What if someone is already there, waiting for you to return? They do say that they always return to the scene. You’re nearly there! Turn left. Now right. Just around this corner. Just here. This is it. Oh no. Where is it, you fool? Where is the body?

Year 11/12 AST
On Friday 30 April, 50 year 9 – 12 students participated in a hands-on information session run by Rustica. Rustica have members from across the nursing, pharmacy, paramedicine and medical schools of the University of Tasmania. Each year Rustica visit a number of schools around the state to introduce students to rural health and health pathways in general.
Their goal is to inform students about:
- The various health professionals and their interactions
- The core aspects of a select profession through practical exposure
- The barriers to tertiary study and foster interest in pursuing a career in health
Students were put into groups and made their way around 6 different stations throughout the day. All participants really enjoyed the hands-on nature of the program and we thank the medical students for giving up their time.

Students in 7-12 have being doing a range of different projects in art this year with the focus being on demonstrating the elements of art. Year 7 have worked with line and colour with their self portraits. Year 8 also looked at line and colour as well as shape with their pop art hero paintings.
Year 9/10 classes have been working on starting their major projects for this term, this is where they get the chance to submit a plan to their art teacher and create their own project/art piece using any method or medium.
Year11/12 students are busy preparing their folios for their mid year exhibition in June.
Art Club is also running this term, this is open to every student in the school not just art students. It runs every Friday lunch, where students work on a term long project, this term is skateboard deck designs! So keep your eyes peeled for the exhibition of these 40 students finished skateboards.

Outdoor Education year 9/10 – Term 2
So far this term Outdoor Education students have been very busy getting out and about completing various activities. Term 1 saw us firstly having sessions at the East Ulverstone pool to develop some survival swimming skills, then kayaking at the Leven River and playing beach cricket.
This term we have been doing various bushwalks including Don Heads, Ferndene, and Mt Gnomon, as well as some archery at USC.
We will be starting out Mountain Biking unit in the coming weeks, and then go into some bush cooking, orienteering, fire lighting, and survival skills.

Student survey for Collective ed.
Beacon Foundation is working with our school on a project called Collective ed. They have asked the University of Tasmania to evaluate the project.
One step is a survey for all students in Year 8, 10 and 12 in the six schools that are part of Collective ed in Tasmania. This survey will take place during week 9 of term 2, commencing Monday 14 June 2021.
The survey provides an opportunity for students in these year groups to reflect on learning experiences inside and outside school, and their plans for the future. The survey is completely anonymous, and will be completed in class.
The researchers from the University of Tasmania will write a short report with the anonymous findings from the student survey for our school so that we can learn about the opinions of our students. The report won’t be about the answers of any single student, but about results from all the answers taken together.
The survey is completely voluntary. If you have a child in Year 8, 10 or 12, you will receive a letter with more information. If you haven’t received the letter by 4/6/21, please let the school office know and we can send you a copy.

Mullets for Mental Health – Beyond Blue Fundraiser
On Thursday 27 May at our school cross country carnival we will be shaving Mullets for Mental Health. Our House Captains are raising much needed funds for Beyond Blue. High-School Futsal Championships
On Wednesday 5 May a group of students travelled to the Devonport Recreation Centre to compete in the High-School Futsal Championships for the day.
All four teams showed great sportsmanship throughout the day and came away with some great results. There was some very tough competition, congratulations and what a fantastic effort from the Ulverstone Secondary College students.
Well done to all students involved.
Last Thursday 6 May, 5 students represented USC in the Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition.
Year 10s Kiarah Nener, Rori Coote, Tallirah Gale and Charlotte Vernham as well as Bailey Falls from Year 11 competed in the senior section.
This involved an 8 minute prepared speech and a short-notice speech. Students selected set topics such as “life in colour” “caught in the crossfire” and “confident and world ready”. In doing so, they explored the issues of technological development, commercial fishing, endangered species, education access and gender inequality.
They were then given a choice of three topics and 15 minutes to prepare a 3 minute speech. Our students spoke with poise and confidence.
They are to be commended for all the effort they put into preparing and delivering speeches for the competition.
All students were awarded finalist participation certificates, with Bailey also receiving an Encouragement Award.
We hope to see some new faces participate next year!
English, Humanities & Social Sciences Teacher
STARS Visit to Ulverstone Secondary College
USC was very fortunate to have Dr Brad Tucker and Peter Swanton from Australian National University in Canberra visit our college last Friday.
Year 5 & 6 students from our feeder primary schools West Ulverstone and Ulverstone Primary School learnt about the Solar System, Indigenous Astronomy and Space travel at the Ulverstone Civic Theatre in the morning.
In the middle session our Year 10 students learnt about Matter and Anti Matter, Space and Time and Indigenous Astronomy. This was followed by our Year 7 students learning about the Solar System, Space exploration and Indigenous Astronomy. After lunch, Brad and Peter presented to our Year 11 and 12 students Life Science, Physical Science and First Nations classes. In this session our students learnt about Elements formed from stars, Life in Space, Space travel and Indigenous Astronomy.
A public event was well attended on the Friday night. This was held in the school gymnasium where attendees learnt about Space exploration and ways in which the gamilaraay/yuwaalaraay people used astronomy. Unfortunately, the weather was not in our favour on the night and we were unable to view the night’s sky using the telescope.
Our school is very excited to be a part of the STARS program. USC now has a brand-new telescope as a result of our participation. We are looking forward to planning events at USC to view the night’s sky later in the year.
A big thank you to Brad and Peter for coming to USC and sharing their knowledge of space and cultural astronomy.
Biography of Brad Tucker
Brad Tucker is an Astrophysicist/Cosmologist at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Mt. Stromlo Observatory and the National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, at the Australian National University.
Brad received Bachelors degrees in Physics, Philosophy, and Theology from the University of Notre Dame and a PhD in Astrophysics and Cosmology from Mt. Stromlo Observatory at the ANU. He’s leading programs using NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope and TESS to understand why and how stars blow up. He’s also building a network of ultraviolet telescopes in the upper atmosphere, a search to find Planet 9, as well as issues surrounding the mining of asteroids.
Brad frequently gives talks to school groups and the public about Astronomy and has regular segments on various radio and TV stations. He has also developed a series of Astronomy coins with the Royal Australian Mint, consulted on science fiction movies and has been featured in TV specials. He is currently in the process of writing his first popular book.
Biography of Peter Swanton
Peter Swanton is an astrophysics graduate from ANU and gamilaraay/yuwaalaraay man from Mackay, Qld. He has been working closely with Dr. Brad Tucker and Prof. Brian Schmidt (ANU) at looking into Dark Sky Parks for their cultural and scientific significance. Peter and fellow ANU Astrophysics student Karlie Noon are also actively involved in Aboriginal astronomy outreach at local schools in Canberra and surrounding regions.
