About Our School

Ulverstone, situated on Tasmania’s North West Coast is a centre of 15,000 people serving a rich agricultural area. Ulverstone Secondary College serves the town of Ulverstone and surrounding rural communities. It was established in 1953 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003. Associated primary Schools include Forth, Sprent, East Ulverstone, West Ulverstone, Ulverstone Central and Sacred Heart Catholic School.

The student population has been fairly stable over the last few years and is currently approximately 515 students. Ulverstone Secondary College continues to explore ways to transform learning for students from grade 7–10 with a focus on personalising the learning pathways we offer our students. Our School motto is Care, Create, Achieve. In 2008 we commenced the TAPP program which enables students to experience TAFE and work place learning.

In 2008 we commenced a two semester program for all grade 9 - 10 students which provides them with the flexibility of choosing six courses of study for 250 minutes each week. In recent years the school has seen the administration area and grade 7 teaching areas upgraded. Art and Science facilities were refurbished in 2002 and parents, students and staff value these improvements. The school has also had substantial improvements through Federal Government funding in the Investing in our Schools program. Areas upgraded include Audio Visual facilities along with the installation of energy efficient air conditioners. The school was successful in gaining a 1.7 million dollar Science Centre for the 21st Century which was completed and opened in May 2011. This complex includes a wind turbine to enhance student learning on renewable energy sources.

Pride in our School funding provided a new Weight Room and Dance Studio which has been built onto our existing gymnasium. Student leadership and contribution to school life is a vital aspect of our school community. Examples of leadership roles include: the SRC, 9/10 Peer Support Leaders, Sports Leaders, Library monitors and Canteen Assistants. Student views are sought on a range of matters relating to the school and its programs. Student leadership is also embedded in a number of courses offered at Ulverstone Ulverstone Secondary College such as Active Leadership. The school has a vision of developing excellence – in academic life, in sport, in life beyond school and in relationships. High expectations are expected of all within our school community. It has a commitment to the student, parent, and teacher partnership. The School Association has played a major part in the development of the school plan. It oversees policies relating to budget and finance, site and maintenance, and curriculum. Our Parents and School Association continue to strongly support the school, as does the local community.
